‘That’s not what we want’ – Solskjaer issues message to Man Utd stars over key problem

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has bemoaned his side’s failure to kill off games in recent months.

The Red Devils were lucky to see off Rochdale on penalties in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday as they let slip on their 1-0 lead to draw.

Their 46-year-old boss has seen his side fail to score more than one goal in 17 of their last 20 fixtures.

“We go 1-0 up in many games,” the United boss said.

“Today it’s again go 1-0 up and you think ‘go on then, get the second’ which is the key now and that is learning curve for these boys as well.

“We need to go for a second.

“At this club you don’t just sit back and hope that’s enough good.

“If you settle for good enough, that’s not what we want.”

Solskjaer was questioned for his decision to snub Paul Pogba by making Axel Tuanzeba captain for their draw, and he has now given his reasoning.

“Axel is a captain in the making. He is a leader and why not give it the young kids?” the Norwegian added.

“We know we can give it to Sergio (Romero), we can give it to Paul – that’s no problem they have been captains before. But it’s Axel so how does he handle it?

“The answer is he did absolutely fine. He enjoyed it so that is just a way of telling him that we trust him.”

Next up for United is a difficult clash against Unai Emery’s Arsenal on Monday, and the Red Devils have also drawn Frank Lampard’s Chelsea in the next round of the cup.

“I had my talk with the boys (at half time) and I am not going to say too much about what we spoke about but the main thing is we are through,” Solskjaer said.

“Some will go back and think ‘yes he might be right and we have to do this better’. But if you are through to the next round you are happy.

“It’s a difficult draw (against Chelsea) but it’s a game that these boys will learn from. They will play one of the top teams in the country.”
