Olivia Colman: ‘I don’t leave the house anymore’ The Crown star on ‘difficult’ change

Olivia Colman, 45, is one of the most in-demand actresses since her Oscar-winning role in The Favourite and her hilarious portrayal in Fleabag.

The British actress will soon be watched by millions once again in Netflix series The Crown as she replaces Claire Foy to play Queen Elizabeth II.

However, despite her worldwide fame, Olivia admitted she struggles with being recognised and finds it difficult.

The star even admitted she doesn’t want to leave her home anymore, due to the attention she receives.

“I’m very shy and private,” she told the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar. “I find it very, very difficult to be stared at.”

She revealed: “I don’t go out! I find that fixes it. I was talking to a friend of mine who’s a therapist, and I said, ‘It’s fine, I just don’t leave the house anymore.’

“As soon as I said it out loud, I realised it sounded quite weird. It’s not what you expect, the other side of it.”

Olivia also discussed what it took to replicate the Queen’s movements in the third season of the Netflix hit show.

The actress said she had to undertake lots of research to perfect the royal’s actions, which she didn’t enjoy.

Olivia said: “I don’t really enjoy research. But for this, I have to accept it. I can’t just sit like me, I have to sit like her, and look like pictures of her.

“They have been teaching me how to walk – I’m really terrible at that, I have no physical awareness.”

Olivia said one of the directors even compared her royal walk to that of a farmer.

A teaser showing Olivia in character as the Queen was released on Friday ahead of the show’s return in November.

In the short season three trailer, Olivia can be seen in full character as the royal and is getting ready to pose for a portrait used on postage stamps.

An unknown character tells her: “Everyone is delighted with the new profile Ma’am, which they feel to be an elegant reflection of Her Majesty’s transition from young woman to…”

But he doesn’t get a chance to finish as the royal cuts in: “Old bat?”

“Settled sovereign,” they reply. “Just the tiniest of changes.”

The camera then pans from a postage stamp picture of Claire Foy’s version of the Queen to Olivia, portraying her ageing profile.

“A great many changes,” the Queen replies. “Nothing one can do about it. One just has to get on with it.”

The November issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK is on sale Thursday.

The Crown is set for release on Netflix on November 17.
