Judy release date, cast, plot, trailer: All we know about Judy Garland biopic

Judy Garland is a star known for her incredible voice and tragic story. She was honoured with awards, including the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award for her contribution to the industry and was the youngest person to receive the honour. But her life took a sad turn ahead of her death, chronicled in new movie Judy.

When is Judy released in cinemas?

Judy, starring Renée Zellweger, is released in cinemas on October 4, the same day as critically acclaimed superhero film Joker.

Both Zellweger and Joaquin Phoenix, the star of Joker, have been tipped for Oscars for their performances.

The film will be out in the USA on September 27, and other European countries will follow the UK release and come out at various times throughout the year, with some countries being forced to wait until February 2020 to see the movie.

Who is in the cast of Judy?

Renée Zellweger plays Judy Garland in the film, with child actor Darci Shaw playing the younger version of her.

Michael Gambon plays Bernard Delfont, theatre organiser, as well as Finn Wittrock and Rufus Sewell as Mickey Deans and Sidney Luft, Judy’s third and fifth husbands.

Gemma-Leah Devereux plays Judy’s eldest child, Liza Minelli, while Bella Ramsey plays Lorna Luft, Judy’s second daughter.

Jessie Buckley plays Rosalyn Wilder, the stage manager for Judy’s performances and John Dagleish plays singer Lonnie Donegan.

Royce Pierreson, Arthur McBain and David Rubin are also in the film.

What is the plot of Judy?

Judy is set in 1969, the year of Judy Garland’s death.

The plot follows the five-week run of sell-out concerts Judy performed in London at the Talk of the Town nightclub, which is now The Hippodrome.

The film chronicles some of Judy’s financial problems at this time, which partly forced her to do the gigs as she was paid £2,500 a week.

But the film also features Judy coming to terms with depression, alcoholism and substance abuse, of which she was suffering at the time.

Judy is also based on musical drama End of the Rainbow by Peter Quilter, which chronicles this period of her life.

There are a number of trailers for Judy, all of which show the actress and singer trying desperately to hold things together with her children, her show and her career.

She is also seen trying to handle her various addictions, as she puts on the performances of her life.
