Joe Sugg: ‘It happened all the time’ Strictly star on Dianne Buswell’s backstage move

Joe Sugg, 28, has revealed a secret about pro dancer and current girlfriend Dianne Buswell, 30, and what she used to do backstage at Strictly Come Dancing.

The social media star co-hosts Strictly Come Dancing: The Official Podcast alongside Kim Winston, who’s worked on the show since 2009 as research and producer.

The twice-weekly podcast gives fans a backstage pass to the TV competition, revealing all the gossip, views, glitz and glamour behind the Glitterball.

In the podcast, Joe revealed a backstage secret about Dianne and what happened before the live shows.

“Were there any moves that you could do, or maybe some that you couldn’t do and she thought that she had to change it on the spot?” Kim asked.

“Every single week,” Joe laughed.

“She’d come in with the routine on Monday and be like, ‘This is the routine’, and I’d be like, ‘Right okay’,” he continued.

“I’d try it and because you’ve got that time pressure of having to learn a whole routine in four days, sometimes the pros have to make the call of whether to just stick at it and hope it gets in by Friday, or cut it out and replace it with something a bit easier or stronger on the night. So, yeah, it happened all the time!”

Joe and Dianne were partnered up in the 16th series of BBC’s Strictly but fell short of the crown as Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton stole the show, taking home the Glitterball Trophy.

Joe continued: “I’m really excited to be continuing my Strictly experience this year by hosting the podcast.

“The best laughs happen backstage, so I can’t wait to share these special moments with the fans at home.”

Kim added: “I have worked behind the scenes on Strictly Come Dancing for the past 10 years and am absolutely delighted to be hosting the podcast alongside Strictly superstar Joe. We’ll be taking the listeners backstage twice a week to hear all the goss from the studio and training rooms, making it the ultimate addition to the show.”

In the first episode of 2019’s podcast, Joe let us in on a few more secrets behind the scenes of the prestigious show.

“Little secret”, he said. “We eat pizza afterwards and for the first few weeks I didn’t touch it because it could be me [to dance again].”

“And I’ll admit it here,” he went on. “I did pass a fair bit of wind. It was like nervous wind,” he admitted.

“Did Dianne know?” Kim interjected.

“Yeah she knew,” Joe laughed.

Recently Dianne caught the much-loved vlogger out in a fun prank for her YouTube channel at the weekend. She planned the elaborate trick to surprise her beau at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End, where he is appearing in Waitress The Musical.

Dianne ditched her trademark red hair, disguising herself by wearing a brown wig with ombré layers, glasses and a dark-coloured beanie before queuing up to surprise Joe with a group of fans.

“This is going to be such a bizarre experience,” Dianne said in the video. “It’s risky. Anyone could know it’s me.”

It wasn’t long before Joe cottoned on to his girlfriends prank and the two can be heard laughing about it.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6.40pm on BBC One.
