Bargain Hunt: ‘Have to calm them down’ David Harper speaks out on ‘blazing’ contestants

David Harper, 52, is a fan-favourite antiques expert on Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip.

The star helps guide two contestants against an opposing team to buy antiques from shops or a fair and then sell them in at auction for a profit.

However, David explained it doesn’t all run smoothly with the contestants as he said he sometimes has to “calm them down” when they try to negotiate.

In an interview with Express.co.uk, he spilled: “You do have to calm them down sometimes on Bargain Hunt.

“They will be watching the programme and they go to a stall holder and they will negotiate in all the wrong ways!”

The antiques expert explained: “There’s a certain game you play and there’s a certain game you play negotiating, once they warm to you, you get the price down.

“Some go all guns blazing but you will never get the item like that!”

David said: “You can see the stall holder also blazing, so it goes very badly wrong.”

The star admitted it can go very wrong in a “nano second” during the negotiating stage.

“There’s nothing funnier than real people,” he said.

Giving an example, David added: “I’ll be trying to win the stallholder over and then suddenly they say something totally annoying!”

David admitted it’s not always the contestants who they have problems with, as he said some stall holders can also be a little off.

“Some stallholders, you head towards them, and they say not here and wave you off,” he divulged.

“You have to be conscious of people, say, ‘Is it ok to film?’ Most people say yes it’s fine.”

David continued: “Most people are very welcoming, they see it for what it is, good fun, and a jolly good show.”

David will be sharing more hilarious stories from his time on Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip on his theatre tour, Unexpected Tales.

Revealing some details about his nationwide shows, he said: “It will include stories from behind the camera and stories I shouldn’t be telling anyone!

“So I hope no-one from the BBC is there!”

Bargain Hunt airs weekdays on BBC One from 12.15am.
