Royal travel secrets revealed: This is the shocking amount of luggage the Queen flies with

The Queen is renowned for the huge entourage and numerous outfits that she travels with as part of her royal duty. With countless royal appearances to make around the world, the Monarch must ensure she has appropriate attire for every occasion.

She also makes never to run into a fashion blunder by having a weight sewn into the hem of each of her skirts.

This is said to ensure that her skirt never blows up when she is descending the plane steps.

As expected, all of those outfits-plus the addition of weights- are bound to add to the baggage load.

However the whopping weight of her luggage alone may shock you.

Revealed on Channels 4 documentary Secrets of the Royal flight an expert revealed: “For her 44,000 mile commonwealth tour in 1953 The Queen’s luggage weighted 12 tonnes.”

To make that easier to envision, 12 tonnes just a little more than the weight of two, large elephants.

However, the programme went on to reveal that The Queen isn’t the only member of the family prioritising fashion.

The Sun’s Royal Correspondent Emily Andrews shared some exclusive information about how the Duchess of Cambridge stays looking glamorous.

“Obviously when we go to the airports, especially when it’s hand luggage only, we’re trying to cram all our toiletries into that plastic bag,” she said.

She says she has: “been on a plane where Kate’s dresses had their own seat to make sure they were kept flat.

“They are not going to be shoved in the hole just to be squashed by everyone else’s.”

The documentary also let slip a more sombre addition to the Queen’s luggage.

The Monarch was travelling on a six-day tour in Kenya when she learned that her father had suddenly passed away.

“Upon her landing at London’s Heathrow, special mourning outfits had to be brought to the plane for her to change into before she descended the steps.

Speaking to Channel 5’s Secrets of the Royal flight, one expert said: “At the time, her luggage and clothing was for a royal tour of Africa so she wasn’t suitably attired to leave the aircraft.

“Special mourning outfits were brought to the aircraft for her to wearing before she came down the steps for the press and the media to see her clearly very upset.”

The narrator added: “This extraordinary milestone in royal history would change protocol for the family forever.

“The Queen currently travels with at least three outfit changes a day but an all black ensemble for the purposes of mourning is always included too just in case.”
