Indonesia earthquake: Fears of carnage as mega 6.5 magnitude quake strikes island

The quake was registered at 6.5 according to reports and was located on the island of Seram. The earthquake occurred at 8.46am (11.46pm BST) on the island of Seram, in the eastern province of Maluku.  The United Staes Geological Survey (USGS), reported that the epicentre was at a depth of 18.2km (11.3 miles).

According to reports there have been Tsunami warnings issued.

Crucially, there have so far been no reported casualties although some areas have suffered damage to buildings.

One local resident told an AFP reporter: “I was asleep with my family when suddenly the house started to shake.

“The quake was really strong.

The island of Sulawesi was badly damaged by an earthquake and Tsunami last year.

The magnitude was measured at 7.5 and caused a 10 foot (three meters) high wave.

There was widespread damage across the region with images showing multiple buildings flattened.

According to the Jakarta Post, 4,340 people were killed during the disaster.
