Ed Woodward blamed for Man Utd demise because of transfer tactics

Manchester United will struggle to rekindle their history of success while Ed Woodward is in charge at Old Trafford, claimed Chelsea hero Jason Cundy.

There’s been a reoccurring theme of “average” transfer business, and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is out of his depth, he added.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson left United, they’ve been through four managers, and have only finished inside the top four on two occasions during the past six years.

Pressure has started to mount on Solskjaer after a disappointing start the to season has left United in eighth place in the Premier League, winning just twice in six matches.

“Ed Woodward,” said Jason Cundy on talkSPORT. “While he’s there I can’t see things changing.

“Ever since the Louis van Gaal appointment and then sacking, there’s a reoccurring theme. His record in the transfer market is pretty average.

“It’s not rocket science to go and sign Paul Pogba, and make him the world’s most expensive player.

“You’re not going to get any credit for that, because you’re signing one of the most well-known names in football, and for a world record fee.

“I feel for Solskjaer – and Solskjaer is out of his depth – but I feel for him. But giving him the job when they did, and I said it at the time, I don’t get why they gave it to him then.

“You did’t have to give it to him. Let him go until the end of the season, see how things pan out, see what the feel is, see how you end the season. Well, the end of the season after that, it’s continued into this season.

“I listened to Solskjaer’s post-match interviews… he doesn’t sound convincing to me.

“But for me, while Woodward’s there, the problem is going to exist.”

The Red Devils spent £143million this summer to attract Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James. Over the past three years, the club has a net transfer spend of £264m.

But, Solskjaer changed the club’s transfer policy this summer to attract younger players.

Previously, United had been targeting big-name players for high transfer fees, and most of the signings have failed.

Solskjaer’s next match is against Rochdale in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday (8pm), before the club hosts Arsenal in the Premier League on Monday September 30 (8pm).
