Why Jurgen Klopp apologised after winning Coach of the Year at FIFA Best awards

Jurgen Klopp was named the Coach of the Year at FIFA Best awards on Monday night, and apologised at the podium.

The German boss earned the award for guiding Liverpool to their sixth European Cup triumph with a 2-0 win over Tottenham in June.

The 52-year-old former Borussia Dortmund boss dropped his trophy on the podium stand with a loud bang after being handed the award, and said sorry to the audience.

“Sorry,” Klopp said. “Wow… it’s quite heavy.”

“What can I say? I have to thank a lot of people and start with my family, it’s great.

“No one would have expected this, 20, five, four years ago. We all know what an incredible job you (Mauricio Pochettino) and Pep did.

“I have to thank my outstanding club Liverpool FC, to the owners and my team.

“You can only be as good as your team. I’m lucky to have such an incredible bunch of players.”

Earlier in the day Klopp had spoken out how his side transformed into Champions League winners after losing in the final in 2018.

He told the Liverpool Echo: ”It is the mood, our togetherness, how the boys react with each other, how the boys have grown together, the desire, 100 per cent, it is all that.

“It is these situations that have made us see more and more that we have more potential. We still hadn’t won anything and that is the truth, but at the end of their careers they want to look back and show some silverware, that is clear.

“So it is all these things and that is a good combination. A very good combination.”
