Iran crisis: Boris Johnson says UK believes Tehran behind Saudi Arabia oil attacks

Iran has denied any involvement in the September 14 attack, which shook global oil markets. The attack threatens to push oil prices up. Houthi rebels in Yemen originally claimed responsibility.

But others believe it was the work of outside nations that orchestrated the missile attack, which took place on September 14.

Since the attack, tensions between Tehran and Washington have flared, with the US sending troops into Saudi Arabia to help defend the country’s oil industry.

But now, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK believes Iran is responsible for the attacks.

Mr Johnson also said the possibility of UK military forces becoming involved in helping protect the country had been raised.

On a flight to the UN general assembly in New York, Mr Johnson said there was a “very high degree of probability” that Iran was behind the missile and drone attack.

But Johnson said he saw the UK’s role as “serving as a bridge between our European friends and the Americans” on the issue.

Mr Johnson said: “I can tell you that the UK is attributing responsibility with a very high degree of probability to Iran for the Aramco attacks.

“We think it very likely indeed that Iran was indeed responsible, using both drones and cruise missiles.

“Clearly, the difficulty is how do we organise a global response, what is the way forward.

“We’ll be working with our American friends and our European friends to construct a response that tries to de-escalate tensions in the Gulf region.”

“On what kind of action we can take, you’ll have seen that the Americans are proposing to do more to help to defend Saudi Arabia, and we will be following that closely.

“And clearly, if we are asked, either by the Saudis or by the Americans, to have a role then we will consider what way we could be useful.”

When asked if a response would involve the British armed forces, Mr Johnson declined to specify any possible action.

He told reporters: “We will consider in what way we can be useful, if asked, depending on what the exact plan is.

“There is certainly a case for responding together, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Meanwhile, a UK Government official said Houthi rebels did not have the capabilities to carry out the attack.

They deemed it “implausible” that the rebel group was responsible for the attack.

The spokesman said: “Imagery from the site of the attack shows remnants of Iranian-made ground-attack cruise missiles.

“The scale, sophistication and range of the attack is inconsistent with the Houthi’s capability.”

Video shot of the September 14 attack showed flames leaping into the air just before dawn, with thick black smoke rising from the site visible from space.

The oil field is believed to produce more than a million barrels of crude oil a day.

According to Aramco, the facility also has an estimated reserve of over 20 billion barrels.

On Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said foreign forces in the Gulf had raised “insecurity”.

He warned that international forces should “stay away” to deescalate a regional crisis.

President Rouhani announced Tehran intends to propose a peace plan to the United Nations general assembly this week
