Emotional Roger Federer makes classy Laver Cup speech after dramatic finish

Roger Federer paid an emotional tribute to his home fans after leading Team Europe to victory in the Laver Cup.

Federer was one of the pioneers of the competition, which is played in honour of Australian great Rod Laver.

And the Swiss played a key role in retaining the title for a third successive year.

Taylor Fritz had given Team World a 11-7 lead after beating Dominic Thiem.

But Federer gave Europe a chance by defeating John Isner and sending the match into a decider.

And Alexander Zverev stepped up for his side, beating Milos Raonic in a ten-point deciding tiebreak.

That sparked jubilant celebrations as Europe sealed an amazing comeback in Geneva, Switzerland.

Speaking in the post match ceremony, Federer was invited to speak and he hailed Team World and then the crowd for the terrific atmosphere.

Federer said: “What a weekend it has been.“

“The idea of the concept was trying to bring tennis to the people.

“Make it fun, make it a weekend maybe which is unforgettable and just something very special.And I felt it was.

“I can’t thank the city of Geneva enough and all the players who fought their heart out.

“I think it’s been absolutely incredible. Congratulations Team World for an unbelievable fight.

“Can’t wait for the next one in Boston. So many emotions. It’s been an unbelievable rollercoaster.

“This concludes a dream weekend for me to be playing in Switzerland.

“Thank you for all the noise you’ve made. I’ve loved every moment.”
