Aquaman location: Where was the Aquaman movie filmed?

Aquaman was a surprisingly good film after many of the DCEU films did not fare to well with critics. It has even got itself a second film, which is in development and set to appear in cinemas in 2022. But while other DCEU films are being readied, fans are still obsessing over the incredible sets of the first Aquaman.

Where was Aquaman filmed?

Director James Wan created in incredible, visually engaging world for the hero to inhabit, and fans were huge fans of the gorgeous scenery.

For the most part, in May 2017, principal photography began in Australia, with the majority of the film being shot in Village Roadshow Studios in Gold Coast, Queensland.

However, some parts were filmed in Newfoundland, Canada, the Sahara dessert and various parts of Morocco.

The Moroccan cities of Merzouga and Erfoud were used, as well as Sicily, where the big fight scene was filmed.

Gold Coast locations are the heart of the film, however, with Main Beach, Coomera, Southport and Amita Point in North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, featuring heavily in the film.

But the subtle beginnings of Aquaman, the gorgeous lighthouse, was the Arthur Curry Lighthouse at Hastings Point, New South Wales, despite being set in Amnesty Bay, Maine.

Incredibly, James Wan did not rely on CGI to create anything the actors could not do, which he admitted “makes it very difficult and time-sucking and time-challenging to do all of this.”

Speaking about filming the movie, James Wan told Heat Vision: “It’s a very technically challenging shoot to be on.

“Working with water, and even the dry-for-wet sequences are very complex.

“Our equivalent of two people sitting around chatting in the underwater world is super complicated.

“You have to think about CG with the hair, and how their clothing moves, how are they floating, what kind of rig we put them on and all that stuff.“

He added: “It’s not an easy shoot — but hopefully it will pay off in spades down the line.”

Luckily it has done just that, and became the highest-grossing instalment of the DCEU and the highest grossing film based on any DC characters.

Aquaman earned a whopping $1.148billion (£920.6million) at the worldwide box-office, meaning it bagged approximately $260.5million (£208.9million) net profit.

Let’s hope the gorgeous Australian coast still suits their needs for Aquaman 2.

Aquaman is available on DVD and Blu-ray and Aquaman 2 is expected for release in 2022
