Taylor Swift Won’t Perform At Melbourne Cup Following Animal Rights Protest

According to a report from USAToday, Taylor Swift won’t be performing at the Melbourne Cup in Australia following the political activists’ protests regarding animal rights. The 29-year-old Lover singer was slated to perform at the annual horse race on the 5th of November.

This past Saturday, Swift’s team stated she wouldn’t be performing at the event anymore on account of a change to Taylor’s promotional tour in Asia. Michael Gudinski, from Mushroom Events, claimed Taylor wouldn’t be able to appear at the Melbourne Cup due to it being “logistically impossible” on account of her Asian dates.

This came shortly after many animal rights activists encouraged the pop-star to cancel her performance not long after it was announced at the beginning of September. The Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses urged Taylor on Twitter to cancel the performance.

Furthermore, a petition on Change.org has accrued 6,000 signatures. After she canceled her upcoming appearence, the coalition expressed gratitude for her decision. It’s currently unclear if Taylor chose to cancel her concert due to animal rights, or whether it really was on account of her Asian tour.

Taylor is currently gearing up to begin touring in support of her latest album, Lover which exceeded sales expectations. According to a report from Billboard.com, Lover debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and quickly became the biggest sales week of 2019 in the United States.

According to Billboard, via Nielsen Music, her album sold 450,00 copies on the 23rd of August, the day of its release to the public. It was apparently supported strongly through pre-order sales. Before Taylor’s Lover came out, the biggest sales week of the year was owed to the Jonas Brothers’ Happiness Begins, which accrued 357,000.

After fans got their hands on Taylor’s seventh album, she took to her social media to thank everyone who has supported her career.
