Michelle Obama anger: Outrage as FLOTUS paid eye-watering amount in ‘Becoming’ book deal

Since leaving the White House the Obamas have struck several deals within print and television in a bid to give the world an insight on their time at Washington. After completing two terms as First Lady and President, both have signed up to some lucrative projects.

The first deal was announced in February 2017 – a joint deal in which the Obama’s sealed an estimated $65million (£51million) to publish their memoirs.

Michelle’s first book, Becoming, was released last November and became an instant best-seller.

While Barack’s memoirs were set to be released this autumn but has been pushed back until 2020.

Penguin Random House, who secured the deal with both Obamas, declined to comment on the reason for Barack’s book being pushed back.

The former President reportedly handwrote the first draft of his memoirs on legal pads, much in the same way he wrote numerous White House speeches and his first bestseller, Dreams from My Father.

Reactions to the deal’s value has been furious, with many bemused by the millions of dollars involved.

One Twitter user wrote of the money involved: “That’s just mind blowing”.

Others were critical of Michelle’s apparent desire for money, as one user wrote: “You think with a 64M book deal, Michelle Obama would do a few book signings for free after all the millions she made after leaving the WH.”

The pair didn’t stop at memoirs, also striking a deal with Netflix to produce their own movies, series and documentaries.

Never has a former President and First Lady done such a thing as the Obamas have with Netflix, which many have hailed as characteristic of their forward thinking views.

The Netflix deal will look to continue the philanthropic and social change work they championed while in office.

This later deal was announced in May 2018, with Michelle and Barack launching their own production company, Higher Ground.

The new company will see them both produce their own shows and acquire and distribute existing content.

Netflix has not released any information regarding the financial terms of the production deal, with it only being revealed that is is a multi-year deal.

Similar agreements that Netflix have made with others in the entertainment industry might give some idea of how much the Obamas will make over the course of the next few years.

Rhonda Rhimes who created Grey’s Anatomy, for example, signed a deal estimated to be worth $150million (£119million) over five years in 2017.

Meanwhile, Ryan Murphy who created Glee and American Horror Story, signed a five year deal worth a reported $300million (£239million) last year.

The Obamas have already revelled several of the movies and TV shows set to hit Netflix in collaboration with their production company.

American Factory began streaming on Netflix in August, is set in the backdrop of post-industrial world where technological China and working-class America clash when a Chinese billionaire opens a new factory in Ohio.

While Bloom has been described as “upstairs/downstairs drama series set in the world of fashion in post-WWII New York City that depicts barriers faced by women and by people of colour in an era marked by hurdles but also tremendous progress.”

A feature film based on the life of Frederick Douglass, based on the 2019 Pulitzer Prize-winning biography Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom by David W. Blight will also run.

Several others will run, including Overlooked, Listen to Your Vegetables & Eat Your Parents, Fifth Risk and Crip Camp.

Earlier this week Donald Trump flew into a rage of fury when he tweeted out a string of threats, claiming the Obamas should be investigated over their multiple deals.

He tweeted: “House Judiciary has given up on the Mueller Report, sadly for them after two years and $40,000,000 spent – ZERO COLLUSION, ZERO OBSTRUCTION.

“So they say, OK, lets look at everything else, and all of the deals that ‘Trump’ has done over his lifetime. But it doesn’t….

“….work that way. I have a better idea.

”Look at the Obama Book Deal, or the ridiculous Netflix deal.

“Then look at all the deals made by the Dems in Congress, the ‘Congressional Slush Fund,’ and lastly the IG Reports.

“Take a look at them. Those investigations would be over FAST!”
