The First Lady and wife of US President Donald Trump participated in the ceremony to commemorate the reopening of the Washington Monument. She was surrounded by children from a local school and officials from the Interior Department. They joined the First Lady in cutting the red, white and blue ribbon but was left holding it after her scissors didn’t work.
Melania appeared to find the humour in the situation as she laughed and waved her uncut ribbon and scissors in the air.
She also took a ceremonial “first ride” to the top of the monument as part of the reopening after the historic landmark was closed for more than three years to repair damage.
The First Lady spent about 15 minutes on the upper level, where she met with local students who were the monuments first public visitors.
She then handed out passes to the children to offer them free admission to the national parks.
The students from Amidon Bowen Elementary School in southwest Washington D.C. offered her a group hug in return.
She made no remarks during the five minute opening ceremony but greeted the children with high fives and hand shakes.
The MailOnline were told the children were excited to see her, jumping up and down and shrieking at her arrival.
