In recent years Huawei’s Mate series has been at the forefront of smartphone innovation – last year’s Mate 20 Pro was the first flagship device to boast reverse wireless charging and an in-display fingerprint scanner, two features most contemporary phones have since adopted.

Mate 30 Pro is expected to build upon the solid foundation laid by its predecessor with a revamped camera system, a new display and turbocharged internals.

The device will be revealed in full at 1pm BST (2:30pm CEST) tomorrow – Express.co.uk will be covering all the announcements live.

Ahead of proceedings, here is everything you need to know about Huawei’s forthcoming smartphone.

Revamped camera system

Purported images of the Mate 30 Pro leaked ahead its full debut have shown it with a new circular camera system on its rear.

According to Slashleaks contributor RODENT950, the flagship will boast a quartet of cameras on its rear comprised of a 40-megapixel main camera, a 40-megapixel ultra wide-angle lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto snapper and a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor.

Most notably, the leakster declared the telephoto module would deliver a three-times optical zoom which, if true, would be less capable than that offered by the Huawei P30 Pro.

On its front, the Mate 30 Pro has been tipped to boast another three lenses.

In addition to a primary 32-megapixel selfie snapper, the Mate 30 Pro is also said to feature an ultra wide-angle shooter and another ToF sensor.

Overall, it seems the Mate 30 Pro will boast a whopping total of seven cameras – a figure higher than any previous Huawei phone to date.

A new curvaceous display

The Mate 30 Pro is widely expected to come with what has been referred to as a “waterfall” display.

This essentially means the curves on the display’s sides will be more prominent than on its curvaceous rivals such as the P30 Pro or Samsung Galaxy S10.

Alleged images of the device exhibited this feature – the added curvature certainly makes the hardware look more like a single piece of glass than any of its competitors.

It is currently unclear if the design choice will bring any functional benefits for users to look forward to.

5G-ready

Huawei has already confirmed the Mate 30 Pro will be powered by its new Kirin 990 chipset.

The Kirin 990 comes in two variants – one that supports 4G networks and another with 5G capabilities.

Most notably, the 5G version has support for the next-generation networks built-in, meaning an external modem is not required.

Additionally, Huawei has also declared the silicon should be faster and more power efficient than its predecessor – the Kirin 980 – that powers the P30 Pro and Mate 20 Pro.

At least some models of the Mate 30 Pro have been tipped to be 5G-ready – RODENT950 has claimed the entry-level Mate 30 Pro will only be capable of supporting 4G networks, though.

It is presumed pricier models of the Mate 30 Pro will boast the more capable Kirin 990 processor.

8K video

Yesterday, RODENT950 flooded his Twitter feed with a deluge of Mate 30 Pro leaks – the most prominent of which claimed the new device will be capable of recording video at up to a 8K resolution at 30-frames-per-second.

If true, the new Huawei device would be one of the few flagships in the world to be capable of recording pixel-packed footage.

Most importantly, it is also expected the Mate 30 Pro will be capable of recording 4K clips at 60-frames-per-second, a feature not available on the P30 Pro or Mate 20 Pro.

Operating system

One of the biggest question marks hanging over the Mate 30 Pro ahead of launch concerns which operating system it will run.

The device has been tipped to come pre-installed with Huawei’s EMUI skin over Android 10 but not feature support for Google services or apps.

This means owners that pick up the handset could miss out on key Android functionality in the form of the Play Store, Gmail and Google Maps to name a few.

According to a Reuters report back in August, that cited a Google spokesperson, the Mate 30 Pro is unable to be sold with a Google licence due to the US’s effective ban on Huawei Technologies that prohibits domestic firms from doing business with it.

It is also possible the Mate 30 Pro could run Huawei’s recently announced HarmonyOS operating system that was formally unveiled back in August.

Once again, this would not come with Google apps or services if used.
