Piers Morgan savages Jo Swinson as she vows to ignore 17.4million voters to stop Brexit

Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Jo Swinson, was invited onto Good Morning Britain to talk about her vow to stop Brexit if she were elected Prime Minister. Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid took the politician to task for announcing she would ignore the will of 17.4 million people and throw democracy out of the video.

Jo, who was live in Bournemouth, began: “Now, we had a referendum three and a half years ago and the government has gone away and negotiated what that means for the British public.”

She added she wants to let the British public know what is on offer today.

“In that case, you may have justification for a second referendum,” Susanna replied. “But democrat is part of you name and you said you won’t respect the democratic vote of the people.

“You’re just going to cancel the democratic vote.”

Jo tried to defend herself, explaining: “We are still campaigning for a people’s vote a referendum is the best way to get clarity and resolution of this current gridlock.

“But it does look like a general election will be upon us. In that democratic process, the Lib Dems will petition to stop Brexit.”

She went on to add: “Our position on this election… We will be saying if you elect a Lib Dem, we will revoke Article 50.

“If the people of this country then elect to majority Lib Dem vote then we will do what we said. That’s the way democracy works.”

When asked how she would react if Boris Johnson won a general election to go ahead with a No Deal Brexit, Jo insisted she would continue to petition for Brexit to be stopped.

“I am determined to get rid of Brexit… I am sticking to that absolutely clearly,” Jo stated.

“If I am elected as Prime Minister, don’t be surprised if I stick my by word and stop Brexit.”

She later added: “I have lived through two referendums and I do think we have a very divided country at the moment and there is a lot of us who want to come together.”

Piers snapped back: “With resect you think the way to unite this country is to simply pretend it never happened and tell 17.4 million people I am going to revoke Article 50.

“You are saying you’re the unifying voice, you will tell 17.4 million people your vote centred for nothing.”

Concluding the interview, the presenter insisted Jo apologise to students across the country for promising to scrap tuition fees before tripling the cost.

Eventually she relented and issued an apology to students tuning in: “I am sorry that happened… We don’t want to put people off going to university.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
