Elizabeth McGovern snub: The awkward comments Downton Abbey star made about film

Downton Abbey is in the cinemas and fans can now see the Crawleys try to impress the royal family in a special visit. George V and his wife Queen Mary hitch up at the estate, with exciting results. The story of the film is an interesting one, but it turns out some elements of the script did not impress Elizabeth McGovern.

The awkward comments Elizabeth McGovern made about the Downton Abbey film

It seems not the whole cast was impressed by Lord Julian Fellowes’s efforts this time around.

A source told The Sun on Sunday: “Everyone turned up excited about the film, and determined to make it the best that it could be.

“There was a real buzz among the cast.

“The only awkward note was hit when Elizabeth was heard commenting to a few fellow cast members that she felt elements of the script weren’t right.

But she obviously saw the bigger picture, because she threw herself into filming.

“You would never have known she had doubts, because she gave it her all.”

The reunion atmosphere of the film seemed to reign despite her concerns, it seems, and the finished product is already a hit with fans, despite some mixed reviews.

Writer and series creator Lord Julian Fellowes has spoken out on the script, adding he felt the whole experience was like a “school reunion.”

He told the BBC: “In life you can’t let yourself be daunted by the fact that it doesn’t work out for some people.

“You just have to keep charging on and have a go and do your best… I don’t think one should expect everything to be a triumph.

“I’ve done my best, I know the cast are doing their best and I think it will be fun.

“But I won’t count any chickens, thank you, until it is out, until we know how it is doing.”

Talking about beginning filming for the film after the success of the series, Lord Fellowes added: “It was a very happy time for us all – it was a big hit all over the world.

“It was a very nice cast and I think they made a lot of good friends among them so there was something of a reunion like the first day back at school… a very happy school.”

What is the plot of Downton Abbey?

The plot of the film is something to bring all the characters together and give them all a common goal, said Lord Fellowes.

This film sees the upstairs and downstairs crew preparing for the visit of the royals – King George V and his wife, Queen Mary, and daughter, Princess Mary, along with their entourage.

Everyone is on their very best behaviour – or so they should be – as the whole house tries to impress the royals while living some of their own adventures as well.

But this was inspired by when George V and his family visited Wentworth Woodhouse in the summer of 1912, where the royals met miners and pit-workers and toured towns alongside eating decadent 13-course dinners.
