According to a report from Us Magazine, Sam Smith recently announced he was going to start using the gender-neutral pronouns, “them,” and “they,” to refer to himself. The pop-star took to his social media on the 13th of September to tell fans, “I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to They/Them after a timeline of being at war with my gender.”
Before his 13 million Instagram followers, the 27-year-old singer/songwriter said he was making the change in an attempt to embrace himself for who he truly is. On the other hand, the singer stated he was well aware that some people may accidentally misgender him sometimes, but that’s ok.
Sam added that he was continuing to learn about nonbinary and feels as though he’s not completely educated enough to discuss the topic. Some of the other people he referenced in his post included Laverne Cox, from Orange Is The New Black, as well as Jonathan Van Ness from Queer Eye.
Sam first hinted at the switch in pronouns when he thanked James Barr for referring to him as “they,” on his Twitter account on the 10th of September, Tuesday. Smith said on his Twitter account that James was the first person to refer to him as “they,” and it was “really beautiful.”
Speaking with the Sunday Times back in October 2017, Sam addressed his gender identity then as well, stating that he felt as “much as a woman as I am a man.” Sam later said he was non-binary in March during an appearence on Jameela Jamil’s I Weigh series on IG TV.
Smith said on the show that a person doesn’t have to identify with one gender particularly, instead, an individual can combine various traits from different genders to create their very own “special creation.” Sam said on the show that he “floated somewhere in between.”

While discussing the possibility of a sex change, Sam said that he doesn’t believe it’s something he would consider doing at this point.
