Rangers boss Steven Gerrard eyeing up free agents to boost Premiership chances

Steven Gerrard is keen to keep on the look out for new players even though the transfer window is now closed until January.

Rangers suffered a damaging 2-0 home defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic before the ongoing international break, which could have tempted them to scout new players.

Although deals cannot be done with other clubs, there are several prominent free agents that could join up ahead of their Europa League group stage clash against Feyenoord.

Football Insider have claimed that the Light Blues are still in the market for new additions, even though they brought in 11 new players during the summer.

Ryan Kent’s late move from Liverpool was expected to be the final incoming deal for Gerrard until January, but the ex-England captain is still looking to bring in some more quality.

The signing of Kent was the second biggest fee ever paid for a player by the Premiership challengers, with a fee of £7.5million including add-ons set to be revived by Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Joe Aribo, Steven Davis, Brandon Barker and Greg Stewart show that Rangers are very keen on signing players that are out of contract, with links to Claudio Marchisio still rumbling on.

Some more additions might be what Gerrard’s side need to help them topple Celtic across all three competitions this season, with Kenny Dalglish suggesting that the Hoops could go unbeaten.

Dalglish said in the Sunday Post: “I have to say there is no doubt Celtic will take a bit of stopping.

“Indeed, I’m struggling to see a side out there that will beat them this season. And I include Rangers in that.

“They remain the biggest threat to Celtic but they still have an awful lot of work to do.

“They have improved under Steven Gerrard and will continue to do so.

“But they are still behind their great rivals on the other side of Glasgow.

”Steven has had to make massive changes in the past 15 months and it’s always going to take time for everything to come together.

“As a manager you just hope that the new boys gel and get to grips, mentally, with the pressure of being at a big club.

“That’s something that can never be taken for granted.”
