Daniil Medvedev makes bold claim over the future of tennis after Rafael Nadal wins US Open

Daniil Medvedev refused to say whether or not there was a passing of the guard in the tennis world between the top players and the best young prospects.

The Russian youngster was impressive in the US Open final on Sunday night, but was defeated by Rafael Nadal.

Medvedev put in a good performance at Flushing Meadows, but was ultimately beaten in five sets.

The 23-year-old fought back from two sets down against Nadal to take the match to a decider, which he lost 6-4.

Despite Nadal being on his way to a straight sets victory earlier in the match, Medvedev clawed his way back into the match, and the final ended up being the longest in tournament history.

The US Open saw a host of young players putting in strong showings, as Matteo Berrettini also had a strong showing, making his way to the semi-final, where he was beaten by Nadal.

Alexander Zverev also had a good tournament, but was beaten by Diego Schwartzman in the fourth round.

Medvedev was asked about whether or not the younger players have taken over from the old guard, but refused to get too drawn into the discussion.

“It’s tough to say because I don’t want to talk by myself about this,” he told a press conference.

“It’s better for you guys, the journalists, experts, to talk about these kind of things.

“I can say that I’m sure all of us, we’re fighting our best to try to make this transition.

“It’s really tough because these guys, they are playing good tennis.

“I don’t know what else to say. They are just playing amazing tennis.

“It’s really tough to beat them, even to get a set from them, even every game to win is tough.

“We’re just doing our best job to try to make it happen sometimes.”
