Xperia 5 v Xperia 1 – Cheaper Sony flagship is what fans may have been waiting for

There’s a new Sony flagship in town with the Xperia 5 being revealed at the IFA technology show in Berlin.

This latest device arrives packing some serious features but at a much lower price than the current Xperia 1.

Sony is making it clear that the Xperia 5 isn’t replacing the 1 but will sit alongside it to give fans a wider choice.

This means those wanting a Sony phone can now pick from the Premium flagship Xperia 1, flagship Xperia 5 or mid-range Xperia 10.

The new smartphone will go on sale later this month but you might be wondering what the difference is between this latest update and the current Xperia 1.

Perhaps the biggest change is the price with the Xperia 5 costing considerably less than the Xperia 1.

Although there’s no official cost confirmed, it seems this flagship will be available for around £699 – that’s £150 cheaper than what’s currently on offer.

Other main differences include a smaller 6.1-inch OLED display which is bright and clear but doesn’t offer the 4K compatibility you’ll find on the Xperia 1.

With a smaller form factor, there’s also a reduced battery size with the 5 getting a 3140mAh power pack.

Apart from that, the Xperia 5 still brings a triple camera which offers improved night shots and wide-angle images.

First introduced with Xperia 1, Xperia 5 continues to bring its Cinema Pro “powered by CineAlta” to users.

Sony says this has been further improved, allowing fans to create multiple projects with different settings as well as offering more flexibility in adjusting white balance, manual focus, and audio recording levels for filming exactly as intended.

And new for Xperia 5 is something called ‘Photography advice’ which helps prevent photographic challenges, such as your finger in front of the camera lens or someone with their eyes closed, ensuring you always capture the perfect photo.

You also get features including a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, fast Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor and the unique 21:9 screen ratio which makes this device ideal for watching the latest blockbuster movies.

Sony has also included an improved Game enhancer allowing you to record your gameplay with burst screen capture at 20fps and synthesise your voice with Game enhancer’s voice changer feature.

“With Xperia 5 we’ve brought what our customers loved from Xperia 1 into a smaller design with the latest award-winning technology from Sony,” said Mitsuya Kishida, President, Sony Mobile Communications. “Xperia 5 continues to bring uncompromised performance and leading experiences to a smartphone, only possible with Sony.”

It will arrive in three colours ships with Android 9 Pie and is available in the UK from Friday, 4th October 2019.

Xperia 5 is available to pre-order from Wednesday, 18th September, with selected retailers, including EE, giving customers the opportunity to redeem the award-winning and industry-leading WF-1000XM3 truly wireless Noise Cancelling headphones to pair with their new handset.
