Steph McGovern: ‘Makes me sick’ BBC Breakfast host on ‘creepy’ meeting with Donald Trump

Steph McGovern, 37, reflected on a time she met President Donald Trump, 73, in a throwback clip from Have I Got News For You. The BBC Breakfast presenter recalled the moment she interviewed the businessman when she appeared as a guest host on the panel show last year. Steph revealed she interviewed Trump back in 2012 and spoke out about his “creepy” antics during their meeting. In the interview she quizzed Donald about his status as a business tycoon, his previous bid for the US presidency in 2012, and wondered whether his wealth made him happy.

The pregnant business reporter admitted the encounter made her “feel a bit sick”, as she explained The Apprentice star complimented her on her looks.

She said: “He was creepy. He said, ‘You’re so beautiful, I’m going to leave the room to make myself look better because if we do this interview now, everyone’s just going to be staring at you and not listening to me.’”

After telling the story, Steph seemed to be physically affected by remembering Trump’s words, as she comically pretended to gag on the BBC programme.

Explaining her perception of why he made the flirtatious comments, the journalist added: “He thought that would disarm me.

“He thought as a female journalist that was the best thing to say to me rather than, ‘Oh I watched your piece on mobile phone insurance last week.’”

Fortunately, although Steph was stunned by the now-President’s attitude at the time, she didn’t hold back in issuing a witty retort in response.

They wrote to Steph: “No Dan Walker @mrdanwalkermessage, hope he was missed accidentally. Good luck Steph.”

Thankfully Steph reassured the viewer as she replied: “He has sent a separate one…..he likes his own space.”

In the video, Louise sent good luck wishes to the expectant mum and joked she will become a loyal BBC Breakfast viewer in the early mornings during her time off.

“Stephanie my darling, loads and loads of luck,” she began.

“It will absolutely be the best thing you have ever done in your whole life and the most brilliant thing from our point of view is, I know that you will become a loyal BBC Breakfast viewer because at 6am it’s just us to talk to!”

BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One from 6am.
