Rafael Nadal warning issued to Medvedev ahead of US Open final – ‘He’s just relentless'

Rafael Nadal’s tactics could prove the difference in the US Open final against Daniil Medvedev.

That’s the view of tennis coach and pundit Brad Gilbert, who is the former world No 4.

Rafael Nadal faces a Medvedev in fine form with the Russian in his fourth successive final.

While Nadal is chasing a 19th Grand Slam title it is Medvedev’s first ever Grand Slam final.

Nadal is an all-time great with his defence arguably the best in the world and Gilbert believes his tactics could prove the difference against Medvedev.

“The greatest thing about Rafa is that he’s an amazing tactician,” Gilbert told ATP Tour.

“Pulled it out of nowhere against [Diego] Schwartzman to win the first set, a high looping shot. Did it a couple times in a row to win the second set.

“He waits for the right moment sometimes to use tactics.

“That’s the great thing about him, and he’s just relentless… sometimes you forget if he’s 5-0 up or 5-0 down. He’s just working hard for the next point.”

But while Gilbert may think Nadal could have it easy, the man himself knows how difficult facing Medvedev will be.

“He is one of the most solid players on the tour,” Nadal said when asked about facing Medvedev.

“He is making steps forward every week and has had an amazing summer.

“He will be the toughest opponent so I need to be playing my best.”

The final will be just the second time Nadal has faced Medvedev. The Spaniard won their only previous encounter, beating the 23-year-old in straight sets at the Rogers Cup final last month.
