Billy Connolly: 'Never thought I’d get here' Great American Trail star addresses his age

Sir Billy Connolly, 76, explored Massachusetts, United States as he followed the trail of Scottish migration in the first episode of the ITV show. 

One part of his journey took him to Salem, where he he revealed witchcraft is the fastest growing religion in America.

Sir Billy met up with Laura Cabot, the official witch of Salem, where they spoke about their age.

The stand-up comedian, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2012, said he never expected to grow old.

She said to him: “You know I’m your elder I’m 86,” to which he responded: “I’m 76.”

The witch continued: “I know that, I’m way ahead of you. Isn’t it wonderful we’re that old?”

“I love it, I never thought I would get here,” Sir Billy replied honestly.

“You’re a handsome man, you know that,” she told Sir Billy.

Speaking about Sir Billy’s wife, Pamela Stephenson, Laura complimented: “She’s a lucky woman.”

He responded: “He’s beautiful.”

Those watching the show loved seeing Sir Billy back on screens, and many saw the opportunity to call for the Scottish comedian to help sort out the Brexit “mess”.

One person wrote on Twitter: “15 minutes in & Billy’s already nailed it. He’s brilliant #BillyConnolly #BillyConnollysGreatAmericanTrail.”

Another said: “Watching @Billy_Connolly on @ITV tonight is a magical dose of sense in this current craziness.”

A third called for Sir Billy to take over from Prime Minister Boris Johnson as they wrote: “Make the man PM, he would sort the mess, great man and so caring #billyconnolly.”

While a fifth commented: “Should send the Big Yin to sort out Brexit he would nail it in 5 minutes #billyconnolly.”

At the end of the show, Sir Billy headed off to New York as he continued to follow the trail of Scottish migration.

“Land of immigrants and possibilities,” he told viewers.

Sir Billy revealed it was Scottish people who were responsible for many iconic buildings including New York library and Empire State.

He added: “Everything great about New York, America, comes from somewhere else.”
