England captain Joe Root hopes the way his side beat Australia at Headingley can prove the difference at Old Trafford.

“You come off the back of a win like that, it’s a huge lift for everyone in the squad,” Root said.

“For that game to unravel the way it did has helped us turn up here full of confidence.

“But we want it to be part of a special series and not just a one-off match. It’s a great incentive for the group to carry that feeling forward and transfer it into a performance.

“The way we performed in that second innings was more what we’re about as a batting group and it’s a great opportunity to do that in the first innings.

“It’s about doing it in the first innings here, making sure that we get ahead of the game and are not playing catch-up.”

Root has also backed Craig Overton to make an instant impact at Old Trafford, after impressing on his debut in Adelaide two years ago.

The bowler will come into the side for Chris Woakes for tactical reasons.

“Craig looked a real threat in Australia,” said Root. “He did fantastically well there, showed a great amount of character and fight.

“The extra bounce of a taller bowler gives us a different option on a ground that does perform slightly differently. It will balance our attack really well in these conditions.”

“It’s hard for Chris to take,” Root added on Woakes. “He’s been a proven performer for us throughout the summer.

“I don’t see it as him being dropped – it’s about trying to find the best way of taking 20 wickets.”
