Sony Xperia could be set for a seismic upgrade tomorrow – Here's what may be coming

Sony Xperia was last updated at Mobile World Congress back in February.

At that trade show, the Japanese firm unveiled its new Xperia 1 flagship that appeared to represent a re-brand of its smartphone series.

The Sony Xperia 1 was most notable for its display that toted a somewhat unique aspect ratio of 21:9.

This meant the device’s panel was taller and thinner than most of its competitors.

In addition to boasting a unique aspect ratio, the Xperia 1’s screen also has a resolution higher than any of its competitors.

On its rear the Xperia 1 comes with a triple camera system comprised of a primary, telephoto and an ultra wide-angle sensor.

Internally, the Japanese flagship is very similar to a litany of other top-tier Android devices – the hardware is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset and has 6GB of RAM.

Although the Xperia 1 only released a few months ago, it seems Sony could be readying the reveal of a new smartphone at IFA tomorrow that could be called the Xperia 2.

Last month WinFuture showcased alleged images of the new device – it appeared to look very similar to the current Xperia 1.

The most notable difference between the two came from the position of the device’s rear camera module – it was exhibited on the left-hand side rather than being in the middle of its back plate.

WinFuture initially speculated the device could offer a smaller 6.1-inch display for Android fans compared to the 6.5-inch panel on the Xperia 1.

Moreover, the German outlet added the screen itself could have a lower resolution.

Internally, the product is once again expected to powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor and boast 6GB of RAM.

Since the initial leak from WinFuture, Sony has added further fuel to speculation it could be planning to release a smaller device that retains many of the same features as the Xperia 1.

The Japanese tech firm recently took to Instagram and posted a video that featured the tagline “Xperia in the palm of your hand” – seemingly suggesting its new mobile will be designed for one-handed usage.

Sony will take to the stage at IFA tomorrow – Express.co.uk is attending the firm’s showcase and will bring you all the announcements as they happen.
