According to the latest update from NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Dorian is just beginning to move again after it came to a complete standstill over Grand Bahama Island. Hurricane Dorian has puzzled meteorologists with its rare behaviour. For one expert, Dorian is “unlike any storm” he’s ever seen.
According to NOAA, Hurricane Dorian is beginning to move northwestward at a speed of 1mph, and is expected to speed up slightly over the course of the day.
Hitting the Bahamas on Sunday as a Category 5 major hurricane, Hurricane Dorian has caused widespread devastation in the Bahamas.
Dorian has wrecked thousands of homes and reportedly completely submerged the Bahama’s Freeport Airport.
Dorian currently has maximum sustained wind speeds of 120mph, and the current death toll stands at at least five people.
NOAA 11am update: Hurricane grows as it heads for Florida – storm surges
Dorian is expected to move closer to the Florida east coast late today through Wednesday evening.
A powerful Category 3 hurricane, Dorian is currently just 110 miles east-northeast from West Palm Beach in Florida.
In their 5am public advisory today, NOAA said: “The hurricane will then move dangerously close to the Florida east coast late today through Wednesday evening, very near the Georgia and South Carolina coasts Wednesday night and Thursday, and near or over the North Carolina coast late Thursday.”
Despite already causing widespread destruction, Dorian doesn’t show any signs of disappearing any time soon.
