Game of Thrones prequel series: Is Naomi Watts playing Azor Ahai wife Nissa Nissa?

Filming on the Bloodmoon pilot was finished earlier this year in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Game of Thrones fans are keen to find out if and when the pilot will be airing. However, HBO seems silent on the matter and it may be well that network executives want to see it before making any decisions.

Bloodmoon could get a full series order with the whole show getting made and then airing in one go rather than just a pilot.

In the meantime, there’s been lots of speculation about the story and the characters.

HBO has confirmed Bloodmoon is set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones and looks at the descent of the world in darkness from the golden Age of Heroes.

The new series will be delving into the first invasion by the White Walkers and the East to the Stark legends in the North.

The synopsis ends with the teasing line: “It’s not the story we think we know.”

The suggestion is that anything could happen and whatever source material is out there including A World of Ice and Fire will only go so far to offer up clues.

HBO has already announced a roster of Hollywood actors and rising stars including Miranda Richardson, Naomi Watts, John Simm, Jamie Campbell Bower and Toby Regbo, among others.

Watts is one of the biggest names on this list and there’s been many theories about who her character could be.

One of the big theories is that the character is Nissa Nissa, the wife of Azor Ahai who stabbed her through the heart to defeat the White Walkers and bring light back to the world.

Watts’ character has previously been described as a “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret” and a photo purporting of her in costume surfaced online from the set of the pilot.

Nissa Nissa could see Watts have a big part to play in the new series, depending on the direction the programme-makers are planning to take.

The Oscar nominee was dressed in elaborate Westerosi garb and a hairstyle similar to Margaery Tyrell (played by Natalie Dormer).

Then again, one Reddit user called Jorywea78 theorised that she could be playing a villain called the White Priestess.

The user went on to say her dark secret was that she knew magic.

They also added: “White Priestess with the magic to rise the dead.

“Remember GRRM is controlling and overseeing this so it will probably be more book related and less creative editing by the producers.”

Given that so many names have been announced, Watts’ character is likely to be just one of multiple characters and story arcs running through Bloodmoon.
