Steph McGovern: ‘Gutted I can’t be there’ BBC Breakfast host addresses absence on Twitter

Steph McGovern, 37, took to Twitter after she was announced as an honouree for the FERD’s LIST of Inspiring Entrepreneurs and Leaders. The BBC Breakfast presenter was commended by the organisation for showcasing the impact of entrepreneurship education and how it can bring job creation and leadership skills. A Twitter user who works for the Young Enterprise charity took the opportunity to congratulate Steph on receiving the honour in a sweet post on the social media platform. The tweet read: “Congratulations @youngenterprise alumna @stephbreakfast on being a 2019 #FERDSLIST honouree.

“A huge thank you for the fab work you do on a daily basis to support young people, shining a light on how lucky we are to have such brilliant future talent in the UK.”

However, Steph admitted she would unfortunately be unable to attend the ceremony for the honourees, which took place in Vienna on Thursday night.

Replying to the post, the journalist wrote: “Ah thanks!!

“Just gutted I can’t be at the ceremony in Vienna tonight,” alongside a loudly crying face emoji.

The presenter, who is pregnant with her first child with her girlfriend, neglected to divulge the reason why she wouldn’t be attending the ceremony.

Elsewhere, Steph spoke out about children prank calling the NHS on the micro-blogging site in a furious post.

The star addressed the issue when she responded to a tweet by Cleveland Police which revealed how many hoax calls they have had during the six-week school break.

The police department, which covers Hartlepool, Redcar and Cleveland, Stockton and Middlesbrough, said they have received more than 100 hoax calls this summer.

They shared a video which included voices of children ringing the emergency number making false claims.

One person asked for a pepperoni pizza while other clips included someone singing and other children laughing.

They captioned the video: “999 operators have received over one hundred hoax emergency calls since the start of the school holidays from telephone kiosks in #Middlesbrough, #Redcar and #Cleveland, #Stockton and #Hartlepool. Read more here: http://bit.ly/2zzEQkB.”

Steph retweeted the post and branded the prank callers “idiots”.

The BBC reporter wrote: “Seriously… why are people doing this? It’s not funny!! #doyles (Boro slang for ‘idiots’).”

One person wrote back: ”Nothing new Steph, this used to happen when I was a lad at school a looooooooooooong time ago, still doesn’t make it right though.”(sic)

Although Steph seemed to agree with the Twitter user’s comment, she admitted she was disappointed the situation hasn’t changed.

She replied in dismay: “I know it’s nothing new, you’d just think 20 years later things would have changed!”

BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One from 6am.
