Michael Schumacher’s son opens up on similarities to father – ‘It is the same for me’

Mick Schumacher has made no secret about his determination to follow in his father’s footsteps and make a huge impact in Formula 1. The 20-year-old talent recently won his first Formula 2 race, and as a member of Ferrari’s driver academy, has already tested the famous team’s F1 car. During his extraordinary 17-year racing career, in which he won seven Formula 1 world championships, Michael Schumacher was always and continues to be very protective overs private life.

Now his son Mick is using him as a role model when it comes to the protection of his own privacy.

Speaking to German daily newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, he said: “Private life is also very important to me.

“To keep the private really private, something that my father is very good at, it always had priority for him.

“It is the same for me, this is the place where I can relax and regain energy.”

Mick also described how there have already been moments during his so-far short motor racing career where he has been influenced by the decision making of Michael.

He added: “There are many aspects where I say: ‘Wow, that was simply special, the way he did it’.

“For example, I pay attention to how he solved certain situations.”

But despite the obvious close bond he shares with his famous father, Mick is also keen to go his own way at certain times during his career.

It was a breakthrough moment for Mick, as had not featured on the podium all year in his first season of this feeder series for Formula 1.

But despite the rising expectation, Mick has attempted to cool speculation around his possible debut in Formula 1, telling Suddeutsche Zeitung making the jump into the elite category is about “finding the right moment”

Little is known about the health of Michael Schumacher since the motor racing legend suffered a traumatic head injury in December 2013, after falling and hitting his head on a rock whilst skiing in the Alps.

He told Radio Monte-Carlo he recently watched an F1 race with the racer, and he “keeps on fighting”, but also cautioned: “I’m always careful with such statements, but it’s true.
