Martin Freeman wife: How Hobbit actor will ‘always love’ ex Amanda

Martin’s career as an actor has seen him star in major productions such as Sherlock, The Office and Love Actually. And from 2000 to 2016, Martin was in a relationship with his Sherlock co-star, Amanda Abbington. Read on to find out what Martin has said about the end of his relationship.

Martin was previously in a relationship with actress Amanda Abbington, who played his on-screen wife Mary Watson in the BBC adaptation of Sherlock.

But in an interview with the Financial Times in 2016, Freeman announced he had split with his partner.

He said: “I’m not with Amanda any more.

“It’s very, very amicable — I’ll always love Amanda.”

Reportedly, Martin and Amanda have two children together, and never married in real life.

Abbington spoke of their break up to Stella magazine shortly after Martin’s announcement.

Amanda said: “Martin and I remain best friends and love each other, and it was entirely amicable, but we realised we’d come to the end of our time together.”

On working with Amanda, Martin told Desert Island Discs in 2019: “By the time of the last Sherlock that we’ve done we were sort of in the midst of splitting up, so that wasn’t that much fun, but when we weren’t in that midst it was great.”

He added: “I always knew that people who split up can be civil and do it for the kids, it’s all right.

“I didn’t only want to be civil for the children, I wanted to be civil for us, because when you’ve loved someone for that long and they have been such an integral part of your life, what – that is supposed to not count now?

“That just didn’t make sense to me, so we do we get on well and I think the kids see us getting on well, they are just loved by the same two people in different geography now.”

According to Freeman, the pair met on the set of a Channel 4 series in 2000.

He said: “We met on a set in 2000, we met on a Channel 4 drama called Men Only and we clicked immediately.

“We just hit it off, we went on a date a day or two later and we were together for 16 years.”

Martin Freeman’s latest project, A Confession, is a true crime drama based on serial killer Christopher Halliwell.

A Confession is on tonight at 9pm on ITV.
