Friends: Ross Geller’s wife almost looked very different – here’s why

Friends fans will remember meeting Ross Geller (played by David Schwimmer) at a rather difficult time in his life as his wife Carol Willick (Jane Sibbett) had just left him for another woman.

The former couple often went back and fourth, disagreeing on almost everything despite being college sweethearts, but his awkward meetings with Carol and her partner Susan Bunch (Jessica Hecht) always made fans laugh.

Carol was introduced in the second episode of Friends titled The One with the Sonogram at the End, where Ross learned she was expecting his child.

However, Carol was played by an entirely different actress in the episode.

Carol was initially played by Anita Barone, who had quit to pursue a more full-time role after just one episode.

Anita had originally auditioned for one of the main characters in Friends but was offered the role of Carol instead, which she later turned down.

From then on, she was replaced by Jane Sibbett who fans recognise as Carol today.

Although Carol wasn’t one of the main six characters, she did come to the centre of the storyline in the episode named The One with the Lesbian Wedding’ which saw her Susan finally tie the knot.

The couple never played a main role, the Carol star often reemerged whenever it was time for Ross to look after Ben (Cole Spouse) with Ross often getting things wrong.

She has been a reoccurring character from the beginning of the series ever since the first episode saw Ross hear Ben’s heartbeat for the first time.

Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) also had a fair few appearances alongside Carol after she became Ross’ girlfriend, meaning she became more involved in Ben’s life.

Jennifer Aniston recently revealed she would love to go back and that she gets “super nostalgic” for Friends in an interview with InStyle Magazine.

Jennifer began: “In a way, being on that show was the ultimate trust exercise. There was comfort in numbers there, so we all held each other up. I miss a lot about that time.

“Having a job that was absolute, pure joy. I miss getting to be with people I love massively and respect beyond words.”

She continued, “These days I’m super nostalgic. Anything can make me go, ‘Aww.’ Even Fred Segal, I guess.”

Moreover, the actress revealed it’s not only the cast she misses but the iconic era itself.

“When I think back on the 1990s, it makes me nostalgic — period,” she explained.

“They were simpler times. This is going to sound odd, but there was a sense of safety in the world. We weren’t exposed to as much as we are now.

“And even if there was just as much s*** going on, we didn’t necessarily have it in our faces 24/7. It was lighter. There was a lot more human connection.”

Friends is available on Netflix.
