Outlander season 5: Is Jamie Fraser’s ghost from his dreams of wife Claire?

Outlander fans will remember the eerie ghost scene in the first episode of season one, that saw Frank Randall (played by Tobias Menzies) find a man watching his wife Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) as she brushed her hair in the window.

The early Starz episode titled Sassenach saw Claire and Frank warned by an innkeeper that their holiday in Inverness clashed with the Samhain Festival, a Celtic celebration of the time which is supposed to be when the barrier between the spiritual and physical world is at its weakest.

Frank saw the mysterious man on his return to the lodge after a storm, where he approached the figure saying: “Excuse me? Can I help you with something?”

The figure disappeared and Frank told Claire: “When he pushed past me, he was close enough that I should’ve felt him brush my sleeve as he passed, but I didn’t, and I turned around to say something, and he’d gone.”

“He just vanished. That’s when I felt a chill down my spine.”

However, having watched a further four outings, it didn’t take long for fans to speculate the Kilt wearing phantom was really Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), and the author has since spoken out about the scene.

In the FAQ section of her website, author Diana Gabaldon wrote: “The ghost is Jamie–but as for how it fits into the story, All Will Be Explained–in the last book.”

The author has spoken out about the ghost’s identity before, revealing Jamie actor Sam Heughan had asked her if it was his character watching Claire in the season one episode.

The writer revealed Jamie’s age of the appearance which seemed to leave fans confused.

Speaking on the Outlander Podcast following season one Diana said: “Sam Heughan asked me, and I hadn’t thought about it before. But I just answered him immediately. He’s about 25.”

However, since Jamie and Claire are both in their late forties at the end of season four, fans are wondering how Jamie returns as a ghost at 25.

Moreover, it seems the answer is yet to be written as the writer told fans It’ll be the last thing revealed in the tenth and final book, and she’s currently at work on the ninth.

However, one fan seems to think Frank didn’t see Jamie’s ghost, but his spirit time-travelling in his dreams.

The user said: “Every time Jamie dreams that sees things in the future, that’s his ‘ghost’ visiting them.”

Although Jamie can’t time travel like Claire and Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton), the answers could be revealed in one of his many visions that seem to hint at him having a second sight.

Meanwhile, Brianna actress Sophie Skelton seems to have revealed a major storyline for her character next season.

After posting a picture on Instagram of her new modern hairstyle, fans speculate Bri could be returning to the 21st century.

Sophie posted the image with the caption: “Chop chop,” drawing attention to the snip.

Brianna was last seen in the 1700s after giving birth to baby Jemmy, and her husband seemed keen for them to return to the 20th century.

However, this will prove difficult as it is not yet known if the baby will be able to travel through time using the stones.

Outlander returns to STARZ and Amazon Prime Video in spring 2020.
