Novak Djokovic booed by US Open fans after shock retirement against Stan Wawrinka

Novak Djokovic retired from the US Open and the fans on Arthur Ashe let the world No 1 know what they thought by booing him off the court.

Trailing by two sets to love after an inspired performance by Stan Wawrinka, Djokovic received treatment from the tournament trainer during the break between sets.

Djokovic then came out and served out to love with little problem but in his next service game, the Serbian made three consecutive forehand errors to fall 0-40 down.

He then hit a double fault to drop serve, shook his head and told umpire Nico Helwerth he could no longer continue.

As the umpire announced the end of the match, the fans in the stadium booed loudly before applauding Wawrinka.

Then as Djokovic walked off the court, the boos started again, leading Djokovic to put his thumb up to the crowd.

In his on-court interview, Wawrinka expressed his sympathy for Djokovic.

“It’s never the way you want to win a match,” the Swiss star told ESPN.

“I feel sorry for Novak, he’s an amazing champion, we played a brilliant battle. I feel sorry for him, but I wanted to keep my level tonight.”
