Hurricane Dorian damage: Record-breaking Dorian slams into Bahamas

Hurricane Dorian has smashed into the Bahamas with record-breaking wind speeds of 185mph. In the latest update (4pm EDT) from NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, the NHC have warned Dorian is a “life-threatening situation”. The NHC have warned residents in the Abaco Islands to stay in their shelter and not to venture into the eye of the hurricane if it passes over.

Hurricane Dorian is now the strongest hurricane to have ever hit the norhtwestern Bahamas.

In their 2pm (EDT) public advisory, the NHC said: “Dorian is a extremely dangerous category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

“Some fluctuations in intensity are likely, and Dorian is expected to remain a catastrophic hurricane during the next few days.”

Meteorologists are currently tracking Hurricane Dorian’s path intensely.

On its current trajectory, Hurricane Dorian is predicted to continue to affect Great Abaco today, before moving near or over Grand Bahama Island tonight and Monday.

The NHC predicts Dorian will move closer to the Florida east coast late Monday through Tuesday night.

CNN have reported major damage in the Abaco Islands today as a result of Dorian.

There have been reports of houses with their roofs blown off, and houses destroyed completely.

The Hope Town Volunteer Fire and Rescue department have posted on social media: “Now is not a time to panic now is the time to plan how to get the recovery started.

“Hope Town Fire and Rescue will be heading up the efforts for recovery.”

According to Reuters, car alarms are blazing across the island as it becomes covered in twisted metal and splintered wood.

Reportedly residents have posted videos on social media of flood waters covering halfway up the sides of their houses.

Although many residents have evacuated the area, some remain on the island.

With the hurricane predicted to slow to only 1mph, the NHC are concerned its speed will prolong the devastating effects of Hurricane Dorian.
