The Handmaid’s Tale: Shock reason Nick Blaine scenes had to be cut from season 3 revealed

The Handmaid’s Tale brought June (played by Elisabeth Moss) together with Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) back in season one.

Finding some sort of emotional solace within one another, the pair quickly became extremely close, and even saw June become pregnant with Nick’s child.

Unfortunately it seemed to be too good to be true, as Nick was revealed to be a high ranking member of Gilead’s military in season three of the Hulu show.

This reveal certainly drove a wedge through the pair’s relationship – but not many scenes were aired which showed the fallout of this news.

While fans still don’t really know the true nature behind Nick’s job, they will almost certainly find out the truth in season four.

Originally the third season was supposed to include a number of shots and scenes involving Nick – so these may have explored his lifestyle a little deeper.

But showrunner Bruce explained he had to cut Nick’s scenes for a particular reason.

He explained: “We just don’t have the real estate in the show.

“We would love to delve into more stories. We had all sorts of other stuff with Nick, and with characters like Janine and Moira. You really feel like you could have 23 hour-long episodes and every single one be interesting.”

Bruce went on to say that, in the end, he made “the best they could of it,” and added that Nick actor Max is a “wonderful actor”.

He added: “He has scenes that we filmed that we weren’t able to use, and it’s heartbreaking. I feel like s**t when I have to cut that stuff, but sometimes you have to make those decisions when you’re trying to make a good TV show overall.”

Hopefully fans will see the content already filmed in the next season, which will presumably clear up Nick’s sordid backstory.

Until then fans will continue to theorise over what is to come next in the fourth season of the show.

Fans such as X23onastarship have been hard at work in looking for clues as to what season four will be based around.

And this particular Reddit user recently theorised episode one would open with a scream, saying: “Or general sounds of panic as a wife or a Martha realises the child in their house is missing.”

They went on to say there would most likely be a number of slow and calculated shots of empty children’s rooms with a number of adults panicking about their missing children.

As June was obviously involved in the escape from Gilead, she may come under fire from a number of the parents and commanders in the show.

Alternatively, has June covered her tracks enough to get away with the harrowing escape from the dictatorship?

And if so, will the children she saved be able to stay in Canada?

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 is now available to stream on Hulu and airs on Channel 4 on Sundays at 9pm.
