Novak Djokovic gives shoulder injury update after battling US Open performance

Novak Djokovic was reluctant to discuss his shoulder injury problems after booking his place in the US Open third round.

Ahead of the match, Djokovic revealed he had been nursing an injury for around 10 days but refused to disclose where the problem was.

But after just seven games of the first set, Djokovic called for a trainer after twice wincing in pain when hitting backhands and received reatment on a left shoulder injury.

The tournament physio gave an extensive massage to Djokovic in a medical time out at 4-3 and after resuming play, the speed on Djokovic’s groundstrokes dropped by 5mph.

But the world No 1 was still able to stay in the match and went on to win the first set 6-4 over a disappointed Londero.

At the start of the second set, Djokovic found himself a double break down before winning five games in a row and serving for a two sets to love lead.

However, Londero broke Djokovic’s serve and took the Serb to a tiebreak where the defending champion was the better player and won it to take a firm grip on the match.

In the third set, Djokovic raced away with the match and completed a 6-4 7-6 6-1 victory which was harder than the scoreline suggests.

In his on-court interview, Djokovic was asked to provide an update on his health and opted to be coy with specific details.

He told ESPN:  “It was definitely affecting my serve and backhand but look I don’t want to talk about it too much.

“Obviously I want to congratulate Londero for showing a great fighting spirit and playing some great tennis tonight. It’s a straight-set win, but it was definitely a very difficult match to play, a lot of rallies, especially in the first couple of sets.

“I was definitely tested and this is something I have been carrying for quite a while now and it wasn’t easy obviously playing with pain, but you have to find a way to fight and hope that you get some lucky shots and get some opportunities.

“When they are presented, you have to step in an take them. That was the case, again I had some luck, as I said in the second set to come back and move on.

“It’s not the first time that I am facing this kind of adversity so to say or challenge. It is what it is and I am just grateful to be on the court.”

Djokovic then added: “I’ll probably freeze my arm for 48 hours and not do anything with it and then see what happens.”
