Emmerdale spoilers: Doug Potts distracts viewers in bizarre drug plot 'Work it out'

Doug (played by Duncan Preston) is a firm favourite on Emmerdale and many of the villagers see him as a pillar of the community.

Earlier this year, Doug suffered an injury however when he set up the local football team on the ITV soap to help bring the community together.

As his back pain got increasingly worse, Doug discovered his late friend Gerry Roberts (Shaun Thomas) has been growing cannabis in an allotment as the green fingered pair shared a passion for gardening.

Last night’s episode saw Doug begin to use the cannabis plants for medicinal purposes in public, although he wasn’t caught by several villagers despite demonstrating signs he was induced by the effects of the drug, which left viewers perplexed.

Fans of the show saw Doug smoking the cannabis joint at the back of the community centre but as he took a moment for himself, he was interrupted.

As recovering drug addict and loveable rogue Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) came around the corner, Doug was forced to act fast as he stubbed out the joint.

The pensioner then threw the evidence in the bin before Dawn saw what he’d been up to, but she was still able to smell the scent of the drug.

However, Dawn didn’t grill Doug too much about it and later on in the episode, her former step-mother Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) came across the evidence.

Harriet went on to inform community centre owner Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) she could lose her licence of the premises after she discovered the cigarette in the bin.

Knowing Dawn has a history with drugs, Charity blamed her for smoking the cigarette, which the villager denied.

As the two women disagreed, they failed to notice Doug walking around and viewers were still stumped they couldn’t smell the drug’s scent on the pensioner.

To make his high even more evident, Doug was seen wafting down a packet of crips as he developed an extreme hunger from smoking the cannabis.

Viewers took to Twitter to voice their frustrations over Doug not being caught out by his fellow villagers despite experiencing the symptoms of taking the drug.

One viewer wrote: “Work it out charity FFS A woman of the world?? Doug’s munching like funk lol lol.”

Another added: “So no one can spot Doug being high, smelling of weed and the munchies?”

A third posted: “As someone who has lived around drugs, you’d have thought Dawn could have smelt that spliff being that close to it.”

Having seemingly got away with his drug taking, will anyone uncover Doug’s cannabis habit in upcoming scenes?

Viewers will have to keep their eyes peeled as Doug’s drug plot continues, but earlier this week Kim Tate’s (Claire King) business partner was revealed.

Having only arrived in the village recently, Al Chapman (Michael Wildman) was the mysterious character Kim was seen calling in scenes early this month after the horrifying factory fire.

Could their plan be foiled however as Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) returns to throw a spanner in the works?

Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
