Trump fury: President blames Democrats for 'nasty' beg bug claims about his Doral resort

The resort, Trump National Doral, is the location he is promoting as the next venue for the G7 meeting of global leaders. In a tweet, he said: “No bedbugs at Doral. The Radical Left Democrats, upon hearing that the perfectly located (for the next G-7) Doral National MIAMI was under consideration for the next G-7, spread that false and nasty rumour. Not nice!”

The claims appear to stem from a 2016 lawsuit alleging bedbug infestation at the Trump National Doral brought by the New Jersey insurance executive Eric Linder.

Mr Linder claimed that he woke up to find himself covered with what looked like an attack from pesky bed bugs.

In court papers, his claim complained of “welts, lumps and marks over much of his face, neck, arms and torso”.

Photographs of Mr Linder’s ravaged body appeared to back-up his claims.

Doral’s management was quick to defend itself, and said that Linder had “conducted himself so carelessly and negligently that his conduct was the sole proximate cause or contributing cause” for the insects’ attack.

The lawsuit was reportedly settled by the club at a later date

The case resurfaced after Trump pitched his resort as the perfect location as the next G7 Summit location.

He said: “Doral happens to be within Miami, it’s an ideal place, it’s a very, very successful area.

“It’s very importantly only five minutes away from the airport, the airport’s right next to her.

“We have a series of magnificent buildings, we call them bungalows, they each hold from 50 to 70 very luxurious rooms with magnificent rooms.

“We have incredible conference rooms, incredible restaurants – we wouldn’t even have to do the work that they did here.”

On Monday the hashtag “#TrumpBedBugs” was trending on Twitter.

The controversy did not stop Trump from self-promoting the resort.

Despite not being allowed to profit as a result of his presidency, Trump said he would not receive any funds if the G7 Summit took place at the Doral.

In a G7 press conference, he said: “From my standpoint I’m not going to make any money, in my opinion I’m not going to make any money.

“I don’t want to make money. I don’t care about making money.”

The Doral Resort, where a stay can set a guest staying in the presidential suite back $7,229 (£5,890), was purchased by The Trump Organisation in 2012.

The purchase cost Trump $150million(£122million), and he proceeded to make a series of changes to the resort, including a change to its name, from the Doral Country Club to its current Trump National Doral.

In 2013 Trump began a $250million (£203million) renovation, with the works finished in 2016.

In May 2019, the Doral was reported by the Washington Post to be in “steep decline”.

The 643-room resort suffered losses in its net operating income, falling 69 percent in two years.

According to the same publication, failed income projections also led the Doral being short of cash – in 2017 it was predicted that the resort would rake in $85million (£69million), but fell short by $10million (£8million).

Several other controversies and lawsuits have occurred at the golf resort.

The Post also said that in 2016 a Miami judge ordered the Doral to be foreclosed and sold, unless the Trump Organisation paid $32,800 to a Miami paint supply company.
