Simona Halep backed to win US Open and buck recent Grand Slam trend

Simona Halep has been tipped by Pam Shriver to be victorious at the US Open following on from her success at Wimbledon.

Halep won at SW19 earlier this summer for her second Grand Slam title after winning the French Open in 2018.

Naomi Osaka won back-to-back Grand Slams after following up her victory at Flushing Meadows last year with an Australian Open win in January.

But before then, it was only Serena Williams in 2015 that managed consecutive Grand Slam titles.

Shriver though, who reached the US Open final in 1978, believes Halep can buck that trend.

When asked by ESPN who will win the US Open, Shriver said: “Simona Halep. She is ready to go back-to-back in majors.

“Her performance at Wimbledon, her least favourite surface, was next-level great.

“That win should catapult her to more majors at a time when not many women are prepared to win multiple majors.”

Halep has struggled in recent years at the US Open, being knocked out in the first round for the past two years.

She faces American Nicole Gibbs in the first round this year with the match on Louis Armstrong Stadium on Tuesday.

And Halep finds the atmosphere in the bustling city of New York hard to handle at times.

“It’s a little bit too much for me,” she admitted ahead of this year’s tournament.

“But I’m getting used to it more and more. I try to adjust myself as much as possible to this atmosphere. It’s loud and it’s different. There are many people around.

“I like it, but as spectator. As a player, it’s a little bit tougher for me, but year by year I’m getting better. So I have to work to improve more.”
