Great British Bake Off 2019: Channel 4 show announces big shake-up for landmark series

The Great British Bake Off began way back in 2009, with Paul Hollywood, 53, and Mary Berry, 84, judging the cooking competition on the BBC.

Tonight’s first episode of the tenth series will be the third to broadcast on Channel 4, with Paul once again joined by Prue Leith, 79, to comment on the Bakers’ creations.

Noel Fielding, 46, and Sandi Toksvig, 61, took on the presenting role from Mel Giedroyc, 51, and Sue Perkins, 49, when the show made the big switch.

Although the judges, presenters and channels may have changed over the years, the premise of the show has remained intact but to celebrate the 10th anniversary, another shake-up has been announced.

To mark their 10th birthday, The Great British Bake Off official Twitter account has unveiled a special emoji fans of the show will see when they take to social media to comment on tonight’s proceedings.

Announcing the news on the micro-blogging site, the post read: “A very special emoji for a very special series of Bake Off. Tonight at 8pm on Channel 4. #GBBO.”

The post featured the hashtag “#GBBO” with an adjoining emoji of a slice of birthday cake featuring two candles of a one and a zero, showing the number 10.

Commenting on the announcement, one fan wrote: “#HappyBirthdayBakeOff It’s my birthday tomorrow, I’m a little older than 10 though! Can’t wait for tonight!! #GBBO.”

Ahead of Bake Off day as fans of the show have come to call the time of the first episode, the official Twitter account of the cooking competition paid tribute to their celebrations.

A poem posted last night read: “’Twas the night before Bake Off, when all through the nation, fans were eagerly awaiting our tenth birthday celebration.”

“We’ve had a decade of soggy bottoms and fine baking in the tent, and a naughty squirrel outside who picks up every scent.

“An endless supply culinary puns, no scone has been left unturned, And plenty of naughty innuendos, which has made us quite concerned.

“But right now the gingham’s laid down, our new series will soon be here, thirteen delightful new bakers await, please give them a very warm cheer!” the poem concluded.

Last week, it was revealed which budding bakers from up and down the country would be making up the cast of The Great British Bake Off 2019.

Even before the series has got underway, it seems fans already have their eyes on the champion.

28-year-old Geography teacher Alice Fevorina currently sits in the pole position in latest odds from Betway bookmakers.

The Essex born contestant is at 11/2 to take the crown from reigning champion, Rahul Mandal, 32.

Betway spokesperson Alan Alger said: “It’s the return of one of Britain’s most loved TV shows and with the new series of the Great British Bake Off just over a week away, we’ve installed Alice as the favourite to take home the title.

“The geography teacher from Essex is the 11/2 favourite to be crowned the Bake Off queen, with Amelia from Yorkshire her closest pursuer at 7/1.”

Tonight’s episode will see the contestants tasked with a baking a fruit cake, as well as taking on a show-stopping challenge of creating their dream childhood cake.

The Great British Bake Off returns tonight at 8pm on Channel 4.
