Poldark season 5: Ross and Demelza to return for season 6 after major tease – here’s why

The final instalment of Poldark began with Ross (played by Aidan Turner) and Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) in dire straits.

It had been months since the events of the penultimate episode last night, as Morwenna (Ellise Chappell) had given birth to her baby and was already expecting another with husband Drake Carne (Harry Richardson).

Following Ross’s deal with the devil in episode seven – the Frenchman – he had pretended to strike up an affair with Tess (Sofia Oxenham), and after sneaking down to the mine Demelza unexpectedly heard her husband making incredibly incriminating comments to her former maid.

Ross wasn’t able to explain his situation at Demelza at first, who fled with the children to Caroline (Gabriella Wilde) and Dwight Enys’s (Luke Norris) home on the BBC drama.

Luckily, Ross confided in his friend Dwight, meaning Demelza eventually discovered all about her husband’s secret plot to clear his name and frame the French, and not a minute too soon.

Demelza returned home to Nampara just in the nick of time, as when the Frenchman realised Ross had betrayed him with a letter meant for London, Demelza stepped in front of his gun and began manipulating him.

The tense scenes eventually wrapped up and as the episode drew to an end, it seemed like all the couples’ stories were concluded.

But Ross and Demelza’s story might not be over yet, as it seemed the series deliberately left their next move reunion open.

Ross, ever the adventurer, decided to head to France and continue on with his quest – now a man destined for the life of a spy and covert operations.

Demelza was left to bring up the children and hold down the fort with their businesses in Cornwall, and the pair shared a heartbreaking goodbye on the windy cliffs.

But was their final exchange a foreshadow of the future?

Ross delivered his wife a promise he would return to her before the harvest to meet their new baby despite the danger ahead, but he might get into yet another scrape and need rescuing once more.

“Are you afraid?” the redhead asked him, and Ross admitted he is “every moment of every day”.

“But we mustn’t be, where’s our faith?” Demelza asked. “Where’s our gratitude, we’re here, we’re alive, we have blood in our veins.”

“And the past is gone, tomorrow doesn’t exist, all that matters is now,” Ross assured the mother of his children.

Yet just as Ross turned to go, Demelza begged: “Ross? You will come back.”

“I swear to you my love, I will return,” the Captain said, but are his very words going to mean Ross runs into trouble?

Has executive producer Debbie Horsfield purposely left things open so stars Aidan and Eleanor can choose to reprise their roles in the near future?

There were further clues dropped in, as Tess’s vendetta continues and Ross warned her not to let him “regret” saving her life.

What’s more, George Warleggan (Jack Farthing) seemed to leave the Poldarks with a very pointed hint about who is the true father of Elizabeth Warleggan’s (Heida Reed) son Valentine.

“I came to inform you I am closing up Trenwith, henceforth Truro and London will be my home,” George declared. “Valentine has expressed a wish to visit here. I should be grateful if you refused him permission. He is after all, no relation.

Poldark season five concluded tonight on BBC One, and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
