Joe Root wife: Who is the Ashes star married to and do they have children?

Joe Root is fighting to keep England’s Ashes hopes alive.

Root’s unbeaten 75, along with Joe Denly’s 50, leaves England needing 203 to win the third Test at Headingley.

“Any time Joe Root is scoring runs it puts belief in the side,” Denly said. “We feed off that.”

Root is regularly cheered on at his matches by his wife Carrie – but who is she and what do we know about her?

Who is Joe Root’s wife?

Root and Carrie Cotterell got engaged in early 2016 and married in the cricketer’s hometown of Sheffield two years later.

Cotterell used to work at a bar, The Arc, in Headingley, Leeds – the home to Yorkshire County Cricket Club, who Root plays for.

She has travelled to England matches to cheer on her husband but admits it can be difficult.

When Root left for a test match in Australia in 2018, she wrote on social media: “It never gets easier but I’m so proud of all that you do and the sacrifices that you make.

“Our beautiful little family makes me so happy – you are one in a million.”

The couple have one son together, Alfred William Root, who was born in January 2017.

Root, meanwhile, is facing the “most important” innings of his captaincy, according to former England cricketer Michael Atherton.

“Joe Root is absolutely vital to England’s chances,” said Atherton.

“This is probably his most important innings as England captain because if you think when he came out he was on a pair, on his home ground, the Ashes are at stake and if England lose then the Ashes have gone.

“That’ll be the second successive Ashes series where he has not got his hands on the urn and not many England captains get the chance of captaining in three Ashes series.

“He will have known all that, it was a hugely important innings and he played beautifully.”
