Google Home is set for one of its biggest upgrades in years

Google Home is the American tech giant’s established connected home series that launched back in 2016.

Although the device initially debuted in a single mode, Google has since released multiple flavours of the hardware lineup that each vary in price, sound quality and form factor.

The cheapest version of the connected home series is the Google Home Mini – the hardware can be picked up for just £49.

Google Home Mini launched back in 2017 – the device offers decent sound for its size but certainly delivers the weakest audio of any Google Home product.

The speaker’s main selling point is the fact it comes with Google’s signature Assistant built-in.

This means owners are able to ask the device a manner of questions and command it to perform various tasks.

9to5Google recently issued a report claiming the Mountain View company is planning to release a “followup” to the Google Home Mini.

The product was said to be called the “Nest Mini”, cementing Google’s previous confirmation its Home speakers would eventually receive Nest branding.

At Google’s I/O developer conference back in May, the firm announced the name of the Google Home Hub was changing to the Google Nest Hub.

Moreover, the firm also announced a new smart display called the Google Nest Hub Max.

The brand shift is part of an effort from Google to bring its Home speakers and Nest equipment together under one naming convention.

9to5Google said the Nest Mini would not be much different to the Home Mini in terms of pure scale.

However, the outlet, citing a source familiar with the matter, declared the new hardware would tote “improved sound” with a “higher maximum volume” and “better bass”.

Additionally, it was noted the Nest Mini would come with a built-in wall mount.

However, it was not detailed what this would look like.

Finally, the new smart speaker was tipped to come with a 3.5 millimetre stereo port and proximity sensors.

It is presumed the new hardware will be priced similarly to the current Home Mini.

Google is expected to hold a hardware event later this year where its new Pixel 4 smartphone will be revealed in full.

It is possible the claimed Nest Mini could debut alongside the handset.
