Rory Burns – 3. Failed to make double figures in either innings and looked uncomfortable against the short ball.
Jason Roy – 2. Undone by the ball of the match from Pat Cummins in the second innings but definitively not a Test opener.
Joe Root – 7. Superbly disciplined display on Saturday but threw his wicket away needlessly too early.
Joe Denly – 7. Gutsy response with Test career on line as he reached half-century despite taking a battering.
Ben Stokes – 10. Heroic all-round display culminating in the innings of his lifetime to win the Test.
Jonny Bairstow – 5. Positive contribution in the morning but suspect glovework behind the stumps.
Jos Buttler – 4. Poor game all round and place at risk even though second innings run out wasn’t his fault.
Chris Woakes – 4. Disappointing Test with ball and bat at a venue which should have been made to measure for him.
Jofra Archer – 8. Intelligent first day bowling brought rich rewards but ran out of petrol as the Test wore on.
Stuart Broad – 7. With a little more luck he could have picked up more than the four wickets he ended up with.
Jack Leach – 9. Tremendous stonewalling effort in support of Stokes at the death. Took a wicket with his first ball in the match and the match.

David Warner – 7. Gritty half century when batting was at its most difficult and boatload of catches but could not get to a crucial half-chance off Stokes.
Marcus Harris – 3. Came in for Cameron Bancroft. Australia gained nothing in terms of batting and dropped difficult chance in deep off Stokes.
Usman Khawaja – 4. Underperforming, underwhelming and unnoticed, he continues to disappoint as one of Australia’s frontline batsmen.
Marnus Labuschagne – 9. Who needs Steve Smith? Filled in at No 4 in the absence of the world’s best Test batsman in a manner befitting of the master.
Travis Head – 6. Delivered the direct hit to run out Jos Buttler and made useful contribution with the bat.
Matthew Wade – 6. One half of an important partnership with Labuschagne in Australia’s second innings.
Tim Paine – 4. The batting struggle continues for Australia’s misfiring captain who is barely worth his place in the side.
James Pattinson – 7. Strong seam support act as a key cog in high-quality Australian attack. Put so much in his boot collapsed.
Pat Cummins – 7. Terrific spearhead who deployed brains as well as brawn for the tourists and did not deserve to be the man to concede the winning runs.
Nathan Lyon – 5. Passed Dennis Lillee to become Australia’s third-highest wicket-taker in history but blew golden run out chance in frantic finish.
Josh Hazlewood – 8. Pounded late on by Stokes but hit his lengths relentlessly for Australia in outstanding personal performance.
