Dan Walker: ‘Forget a knighthood’ BBC Breakfast host speaks out on Ben Stokes' Ashes win

Dan Walker, 42, was full of praise for heroic England cricket star Ben Stokes, 28, as he insisted the vice-captain should receive the highest commendation from the royal family. Many cricket fans have been calling for the sportsman to receive a knighthood. However, the BBC Breakfast presenter took things one step further as he suggested Ben should instead become the “next king of England” due to his efforts for the team. Dan posted his thoughts on Twitter in the middle of the tense match against Australia in view of his 573,000 followers.

The presenter began by tweeting: “If he does this… ARISE SIR BEN.

“What an innings from @benstokes38 here. #TheAshes on the line.”

An hour later Dan jokingly wrote: “THIS IS UNBEARABLE. Forget a knighthood…

“If @benstokes38 does this… stand aside Charles… next king of England #ENGvAUS #TheAshes #Stokes #KingBen.”

Fans took to the comments section of Dan’s post to share their views on Ben’s incredible performance.

One person wrote: “Careful Dan – you know that’s treason?! BUT YOU’RE RIGHT!!”

“I heard Boris is willing to step a side if he pulls this off… Brexit would stand no chance,” a second Twitter user suggested.

However, another wondered if Dan was getting too caught up in all the excitement, adding: “Getting a bit carried away now Dan.”

Ben triumphed for the England team at Headingley as his unbeaten 135 led the Three Lions to tie the series 1-1 in the third Ashes Test.

England made an astonishing comeback and won by a wicket finishing a 362/9 after their meagre first innings total of 67.

Following the team’s victory, Dan enthusiastically tweeted: “Ludicrous. Ridiculous. Remarkable. Unforgettable.

“What a day for Ben Stokes & England. Truly incredible. Let’s not forget Jack Leach… the greatest 1 not out in test history.”

Dan’s tweets come after he spoke out about England’s disappointment at the Ashes yesterday on the micro-blogging site.

The BBC favourite admitted the team had a “big issue to overcome” as he responded to former cricketer Michael Vaughan.

The cricket commentator wrote on the social media platform: “Test Match Batting at an all time low this week… #Ashes.”

Dan replied: “Absolute bobbins Vaughany. What has happened to us? The urn disappeared in one session. Was listening to you on @bbctms today.

“5 times bowled out for under 100 in the last 18 months. That is a big issue to overcome.”
