Netflix’s smash hit series Sacred Games was based on a book by Vikram Chandra. Season two of the series uses up all of the plot from this novel, meaning a third series would have to have a new plot with many of the fan favourite characters missing. The Netflix show’s fans, therefore, have been wondering whether season three should be a prequel rather than a sequel to the first two editions.
Will Sacred Games season 3 be a prequel?

Though Netflix has not revealed any details about Sacred Games season three, a prequel does seem like it would solve some of the problems any sequel would face.
Due to the flashback structure of the series, many of the most popular characters are actually dead at the end of the timeline of the show.
As such, a sequel would not feature beloved characters like Guruji (played by Pankaj Tripathi), Jojo (Surveen Chawla) and even co-lead Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui).

Although the show could see Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan) take on a new case, fans would undoubtedly miss Ganesh and co if there was another series.
With Game of Thrones getting a huge fan backlash for its episodes that continued the story past the original books, the makers of Sacred Games might be wary of a sequel.
However, if they decided to follow up the series with a prequel, they could focus on the earlier lives of Ganesh and Sartaj.
This does have its own problems, however, as they may need to recast both characters with younger actors to achieve this.

If they did, however, they would not be the only Netflix series who released a prequel once their source material had run out.
When Narcos got up to date with its story of Pablo Escobar, they followed up season three with Narcos: Mexico, a prequel set in the 1980s.
In an India Today article about a potential Sacred Games prequel, they suggested a prequel could focus on Isa Suleiman (Saurabh Sachdeva), the gangster adversary of Ganesh.
If the show followed Isa, the prequel could look at how he built his Mumbai criminal empire.

The show could also see him meet Kukoo (Kubbra Sait), his transgender lover who then falls for Ganesh.
So far, however, Netflix has announced no plans for Sacred Games season three.
However, the show is known to be a big hit for the streaming service, and the showrunners have express willingness to do more, so season three feels likely to happen.
Sacred Games showrunner Vikramaditya Motwane told the Hindustan Times: “Should things go on we’ll make things up.”
