Paris hospital fire: One killed and eight injured as horrific blaze rips through building

The horrific blaze occurred in the Henri Mondor hospital in the Paris suburb of Creteil. The fire happened in the residential tower of the hospital, which is where the staff reside. Witnesses said they heard an “explosion” as the fire spread across the buiding. 

The flames engulfed several floors of the hospital and the outside of one of the blocks. 

Paris public hospitals chief Martin Hirsch said on Twitter: “The fire in the residential block within the Henri Mondor hospital complex has now been brought under control thanks to the intervention of firefighters.”

The fire was extinguished by the authorities at 1:45am and the cause is currently unclear.

Around 100 firefighters worked to battle the inferno. 

The fire began at 10:30pm last night, Wednesday August 21, and spread quickly across the block from the 6th floor.

The woman who died in the fire is believed to have been killed in the elevator of the ten-storey building.

One resident said to French newspaper, Le Figaro: “We were in bed when the fire alarm went off. When we opened the front door, there were flames. We wetted underneath the door and took refuge under the balcony.

“Other tenants trapped by the fire were rescued by firefighters with the large ladder.”
