Lewis Hamilton offers help in fight against devastating Amazon rainforest fire

Lewis Hamilton has offered his support as the devastating wildfire continues to rip through the Amazon rainforest.

Wildfires are not unusual in Brazil but this year they have been much worse than usual.

An annual increase of 83 per cent has seen smoke cloud clog the skies for miles around.

Sao Paulo, some 1,700 miles from the Amazon fire, suffered a blackout from the dark smog on Monday.

And F1 star Hamilton has offered to help in any way that he can.

“It is devastating to see our world suffer,” Hamilton wrote on Instagram.

“The Amazon rainforest is burning at a record rate and there have been 80% more fires this year compared to last.

“Scientist refer to the Amazon as the earths lungs as it produces 20% of the oxygen we breath.

“More than a soccer field is being destroyed every minute everyday, the world needs to come together and help.

“If you haven’t already, please post about it, it is vital we continue to spark action.

“@unitednations if there is anything I can do, I’m ready to help in anyway I can. #healtheworld #brazil #pray.”

Brazil is facing growing international scrutiny as 60 per cent of the Amazon lies in their territory.

The forest is said to provide 20 per cent of the world’s oxygen so is crucial to survival of the human race.

Meanwhile, Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo has also weighed in on the fire.

“The Amazon Rainforest produces more than 20% of the world’s oxygen and its been burning for the past 3 weeks,” he tweeted.

“It’s our responsibility to help to save our planet. #prayforamazonia.”
